SMA Stair Safety Research
Supporting stair code development the SMA has funded stairway research and testing to better understand their use by persons across our population. This body of work and has served to be of consequence to building, design, and code professionals in providing an understanding of stairway issues critical to building safety.
Our SMA publications are designed to increase awareness and understanding of important stair codes and regulations. One of the SMA’s top priorities is to provide stairbuilding and manufacturing professionals with the vocational resources that they need to meet the latest standards and continue to push the industry forward with new innovations.
The stair code books, like the technical guides and the visual interpretations, aim to simplify advanced concepts, techniques, and regulations related to staircase code, so that they can be easily implemented in the field. These publications are also designed to be used as expedient reference materials to have on hand for both professionals and lay people. The visual interpretations guide, in particular, has received widespread praise for its easy readability and user-friendly structure.
In addition to professional materials, the SMA also publishes educational resources ranging from Preprimary and Elementary curriculum to safety research findings. These materials serve to raise awareness of stair safety for families and children, as well as offer key insights to homeowners and stairbuilding professionals. These educational materials help to inform the public about safety standards, practices, and statistics, as well as reinforce the importance of upholding code regulations.
