SMA at Build Boston, World Trade Center

  • November 19, 2009
  • 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
  • World Trade Center, Boston, MA

Build Boston is an industry wide 3-day educational event that is held by the Boston Society of Architects. A 2-hour seminar titled "Stairs, Guards and Handrails" will be presented by the SMA.  The dramatic improvements in the 2009 International Code Council's model building and residential codes regulating the subject will be the first topic.  These critical changes affect interpretation and provide consistent enforcement of step geometry, curved and winding stair designs, new handrail profile standards and changes to guard requirements resulting from a 3-year study of climbable guards.

The second topic of the seminar discusses the latest research, and testing, in handrail design for those with disabilities.  Presentation of the research project includes objective video documentation of the tests and will facilitate discussion of how universal design of stairs, ramps, handrails and the development of the A117.1 standard might be influenced.

To register for this or other seminars at the Nov. 18-20 Event go to http://www.buildboston.com/home_2008.asp

Resources:

The SMA offers several educational and reference materials that can be used to prepare for this workshop. The Stair Codes Visual Interpretations booklet, for example, is designed to simplify stair code guidelines with clear graphics that illustrate technical concepts. Industry professionals can also benefit from the SMA Stair Building and Handrailing technical guides, which are often required for vocational study as they offer vital instruction on how to create safe, comfortable, and elegant stairs. These resources can ensure that you are up to date with the latest industry standards, codes, and regulations—preparing you not only for this workshop, but also allowing you to build your expertise as an industry professional.
