In August 2025, SMA members and industry guests gathered for an engaging and informative shop tour at Loudon Stair Company, offering a behind-the-scenes look at one of the industry’s respected stair manufacturing operations.

Attendees were welcomed into Loudon’s facility and guided through the full production process, from material selection and layout to fabrication, finishing, and quality control. The tour highlighted the craftsmanship, precision, and efficiency required to produce high-quality stair systems, while also showcasing how Loudon blends traditional stairbuilding knowledge with modern equipment and workflows.

Throughout the tour, participants had the opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas, and discuss real-world challenges facing stairbuilders and manufacturers today. Conversations touched on topics such as production efficiency, customization, code considerations, and workforce development—reinforcing the value of learning directly from peers in the field.

One of the most impactful aspects of the visit was the open sharing of processes and insights. Loudon’s team generously explained their methods and decision-making, sparking meaningful dialogue and takeaways that attendees could apply within their own shops.

The Loudon Stair Shop Tour was a strong example of SMA’s commitment to education, collaboration, and professional growth. Events like this strengthen connections across the stair industry while providing practical, shop-floor knowledge that can’t be gained from a classroom alone.

Thank you to Loudon Stair Company for hosting and to everyone who attended and contributed to a successful and worthwhile experience. We look forward to continuing these hands-on learning opportunities throughout the year.
