We wrapped up another unforgettable SMA Shop Tour—this time with stops at NAC/Cooper Stairworks and the world-class Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) testing lab—and what a trip it was!

From precision craftsmanship to cutting-edge materials testing, this tour had something for every stair enthusiast, designer, and builder.

Day One: Behind the Scenes at NAC/Cooper Stairworks
Attendees were treated to a full-access tour of the NAC/Cooper Stairworks facility, where tradition meets innovation. From high-end custom staircases to streamlined production processes, the team walked us through their expansive facility sharing great insights along the way.

We got a close look at how they tackle complex curves, shop built stairs, and the marriage of old-school craftsmanship with new-school tech. The passion and pride in their work were evident at every step.

Day Two: Materials Science in Action at SGH
Next, we visited the Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Lab, where science meets structure. This was a rare chance to see how structural materials and systems are tested for safety, strength, and code compliance. For those involved in code work or product development, this was an eye-opening (and inspiring) experience that highlighted the why behind the specs.

Why It Matters
Shop tours like this aren’t just a look behind the curtain—they’re a reminder of what sets this industry apart: dedication, craftsmanship, and the drive to learn and improve. It was also a great opportunity to network with peers, ask real-time questions, and get ideas to take back home.

Thank you to the teams at NAC/Cooper Stairworks and Simpson Gumpertz & Heger for opening your doors and sharing your expertise. Your generosity and insight make events like this possible—and invaluable.

Make plans to join us at our next Shop Tour. We will be visiting Loudoun Stairs August 21-22, 2025.
